- Rising damp — This starts at ground level. Moisture travels up through brickwork from the soil below. You might notice staining about a metre up the wall, paint lifting, or skirting boards starting to soften.
- Penetrating damp — Rainwater gets in through defects. A slipped tile, cracked render, failed pointing, blocked gutter. The damp patch often darkens after heavy rain.
- Condensation — Common in bathrooms and kitchens. Warm air hits a cold wall or window and turns to water. Mould in corners or around window frames is usually the first sign.
- Lateral damp — Seen where walls hold back external ground. Basements are typical. Moisture pushes through from the side rather than below.
- Plumbing leaks — A slow leak behind a wall can look like rising damp. We often trace it back to pipework rather than the structure itself.
