What Is Woodworm?

Woodworm is the common name for the larval stage of wood-boring beetles. The adult beetles lay their eggs in cracks and crevices in timber, and the larvae bore into the wood where they feed for several years before emerging as adult beetles, leaving the characteristic small round exit holes.

There are several species of wood-boring beetle found in UK properties, each with different characteristics and requiring different treatment approaches. Accurate identification is essential for effective treatment.

  • Common Furniture Beetle (Anobium punctatum) — the most widespread species
  • Deathwatch Beetle (Xestobium rufovillosum) — found in older, hardwood timbers
  • House Longhorn Beetle (Hylotrupes bajulus) — causes severe structural damage
  • Bark Borer and Wood Weevil — secondary attackers of damp timber

Signs of Woodworm Infestation

Identifying a woodworm problem early is key to preventing significant structural damage. There are several telltale signs that indicate an active or historic wood-boring beetle infestation in your property.

It’s important to note that the presence of exit holes alone doesn’t necessarily mean an active infestation — the holes may be from a historic attack that is no longer active. Our specialist survey will determine whether treatment is actually needed.

  • Small round exit holes (1–2mm) in timber surfaces
  • Fine powdery dust (frass) beneath or around timber
  • Crumbling or weakened timber when probed
  • Dead beetles near windows or on surfaces in spring/summer
  • Tunnelling visible in exposed or broken timber

Our Woodworm Treatment Process

Our CSRT qualified surveyor will carry out a detailed inspection to identify the species of beetle, determine whether the infestation is active, and assess the extent of any structural damage to the affected timbers.

Treatment typically involves the application of a professional-grade insecticidal timber preservative, which is sprayed or brush-applied to all affected and at-risk timbers. For severe infestations, additional measures such as timber replacement or injection treatments may be recommended.

  • Species identification and activity assessment
  • Structural integrity evaluation of affected timbers
  • Professional insecticidal preservative application
  • Replacement of structurally compromised timbers
  • 10-year insured guarantee on all chemical treatments
